ASTM A269 TP347H Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes
Material Characteristics and Core Advantages
The chemical composition of TP347H (UNS S34709) is the essence of its performance: building upon TP347, it precisely limits carbon content to 0.04% to 0.10% (targeting the mid-to-upper range) while ensuring niobium content meets Nb ≥ 8 × C% and ≤ 1.00%. This precise formulation grants it decisive advantages:
Ultimate High-Temperature Creep and Stress Rupture Strength: This is the fundamental purpose of TP347H. Compared to TP347, its optimized, increased carbon content provides the"raw material"for forming sufficient quantities of fine strengthening precipitates—niobium carbides (NbC)—at high temperatures. When operating long-term in the 600°C to 750°C or higher range, these nano-scale NbC particles effectively pin dislocations and hinder grain boundary sliding, thereby providing far superior long-term stress rupture strength and creep resistance compared to TP347, TP321H, and TP304H. In ASME codes, its allowable stress values at corresponding temperatures are typically among the highest for austenitic stainless steel options.
Excellent High-Temperature Oxidation and Steam Corrosion Resistance: The combination of high chromium content (17.0–19.0%) and a stable microstructure enables the formation of a dense, adherent chromia protective layer in high-temperature steam and flue gas environments, demonstrating exceptional oxidation resistance and resistance to spallation, with high long-term service stability.
Reliable Resistance to Intergranular Corrosion: Thanks to the effective"fixing"of carbon by sufficient niobium, TP347H also possesses excellent resistance to sensitization, effectively preventing intergranular corrosion. After proper stabilization heat treatment, its resistance to intergranular corrosion is comparable to that of TP347, meeting the requirements for use after welding or hot forming.
Absolute Integrity in Seamless Tube Form: Manufactured as cold-drawn/cold-rolled seamless tubes, it completely eliminates the longitudinal weld seam, a potential weak point. This is critical for environments subjected to extremely high internal pressure, high-temperature thermal cycling, and aggressive corrosive media, ensuring material property uniformity and predictability.
Important Performance Notes and Design Considerations
Key Differences vs. TP347 and Selection Criteria:
Both belong to the niobium-stabilized family, but their design objectives and performance grades differ. TP347 (C ≤ 0.08%) emphasizes intergranular corrosion resistance and good high-temperature performance, whereas TP347H is specifically optimized to maximize high-temperature creep strength.
Selection Guideline: TP347H must be selected when the equipment's design life, operating pressure/temperature (especially steam parameters) make long-term creep rupture strength the dominant design constraint. Examples include main steam lines and final superheater outlet sections in supercritical units. If high-temperature strength requirements are not extreme, TP347 may be a more cost-effective choice.
Special Heat Treatment Requirements for the"H"Grade: The performance of TP347H depends not only on chemical composition but also on a precise heat treatment regimen. Beyond standard solution annealing, to fully realize its high-temperature strength potential, it is often necessary to adhere to the stricter heat treatment parameters specified in boiler tube standards such as ASME SA-213/SA-213M (e.g., specific solution annealing temperature ranges) and, in some cases, to employ specialized"aging"or"sensitization"heat treatments to optimize the precipitation state of NbC.
Microstructural Stability at High Temperatures: During long-term service above approximately 700°C, attention must be paid to the potential risk of precipitation of brittle intermetallic phases such as sigma (σ) or Laves phase, which can reduce material toughness and corrosion resistance. Proper compositional control (e.g., minimum Ni content) and operating temperature management are necessary.
Boundaries of Corrosion Resistance: Its high-strength advantage does not extend to enhanced resistance against pitting, crevice corrosion, or chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. In environments containing high chloride concentrations or reducing acids, its corrosion performance is similar to that of TP304H/347H and must be evaluated based on the corrosive environment. For severe conditions, high-nickel alloys may need to be considered.
Primary Application Areas
TP347H seamless tubes are the"backbone"material for cutting-edge equipment in the energy and heavy chemical industries:
Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Units (The Core Application): Final stage superheater and reheater tube bundles, headers, and main steam piping in boilers. Its exceptional high-temperature strength is the key material enabler for increasing steam parameters (e.g., >600°C, >25 MPa) and achieving high-efficiency power generation.
Advanced Nuclear Power Plants: Superheated steam lines, certain in-core components, and high-pressure heat exchanger tubes in Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) and Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs).
Extreme Service Conditions in Petrochemicals: Radiant section furnace tubes in ethylene cracking plants and reformer tubes in hydrogen production units, which endure the highest thermal intensity and process temperatures.
High-Performance Industrial Boilers: High-temperature superheater modules in industrial boilers requiring high-parameter steam output.
Aerospace and Energy Conversion: High-temperature exhaust ducts for gas turbines and hot-end components in advanced thermal energy conversion systems.
Standards and Quality Assurance
While ASTM A269 provides the baseline requirements for TP347H tubing, its high-temperature applications typically demand compliance with more stringent additional standards:
Dual Standard Compliance: Purchase specifications often concurrently reference both ASTM A269 (General Tubing) and ASME SA-213/SA-213M (Boiler and Heat Exchanger Tubes). SA-213 contains more specific and rigorous requirements for high-temperature performance.
Precise Control of Chemical Composition: Carbon and niobium content and their ratio (Nb/C) are focal points for verification. Precise mill test reports must be provided to confirm compliance with UNS S34709 requirements.
Mandatory High-Temperature Performance Data: Suppliers should be able to provide high-temperature stress rupture test data compliant with ASME code requirements or the certified high-temperature allowable stress values derived from such data. This information is the direct basis for design and material selection.
Strict Heat Treatment Certification: Detailed heat treatment process records (temperature, time, cooling method) must be provided, demonstrating compliance with the requirements for"H"grade materials as per standards like SA-213.
Comprehensive Non-Destructive Testing: In addition to hydrostatic testing, 100% Eddy Current (ET) or Ultrasonic (UT) testing of the tubes is typically required to detect any minor defects that could affect high-temperature strength.
Intergranular Corrosion Testing: Conducting tests such as ASTM A262 Practice E per order requirements verifies its resistance to sensitization, ensuring no susceptibility to intergranular corrosion develops during welding or fabrication.
Dimensional and Microstructural Examination: Strict dimensional tolerances are enforced for precise assembly. Metallographic examination confirms grain size (typically requiring ASTM No. 7 or coarser) and the absence of excessive amounts of harmful phases like delta ferrite.
