Socket weld flanges are designed specifically for small diameter, high-pressure piping systems. The pipe is inserted into the socket of the flange and welded externally with a single fillet weld, creating a strong connection with minimal internal crevices. This design is ideal for clean service applications where crevice corrosion could be a concern and where smooth internal flow is essential.
These flanges are particularly well-suited for applications in sizes 2 inches and smaller, where the cost and complexity of butt-welding would not be economical. The socket design provides excellent alignment and requires less skill to install compared to butt-weld connections, while still maintaining high-pressure capabilities suitable for critical process applications.
