ASTM A312 TP347 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes
Material Characteristics and Core Advantages
The chemical composition of TP347 (typically ~17-19% Chromium, 9-13% Nickel, Niobium content ≥10×Carbon content and ≤1.0%) determines its unique properties:
Exceptional Resistance to Sensitization and Intergranular Corrosion: The stabilizing effect of niobium ensures the material maintains outstanding resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or prolonged exposure to the sensitization temperature range of 450-900°C, making it particularly suitable for heavy welded components and equipment operating within this range.
Excellent High-Temperature Strength and Stability: The addition of niobium not only serves as a stabilizer but also forms fine strengthening phases, significantly enhancing the material's creep-rupture strength and creep resistance at high temperatures (typically for continuous service up to approximately 870°C). Its high-temperature mechanical properties surpass those of TP321.
Good Oxidation and Carburization Resistance: Exhibits good resistance in high-temperature oxidizing and carburizing atmospheres, with scale that has relatively low adherence and is easier to remove.
Comprehensive Corrosion Resistance: Possesses corrosion resistance comparable to TP304 against oxidizing media like nitric acid, along with a degree of resistance to various organic and inorganic acids.
Reliability of Seamless Pipe: The seamless manufacturing process ensures uniform microstructure, absence of a longitudinal weld seam, and provides higher structural integrity and service reliability under conditions of high temperature, high pressure, and thermal cycling.
Primary Application Areas
TP347 seamless pipes are specifically designed for demanding high-temperature and anti-sensitization environments, primarily used in:
Power Plant Boilers and Energy Sector: Superheater tubes, reheater tubes, high-temperature steam lines, and other critical high-temperature components in large-scale boilers, especially for ultra-high pressure and supercritical parameter units.
Petrochemical Industry: Convection and radiant section tubes in ethylene cracking furnaces and hydrogen reformer furnaces, high-temperature heat exchanger tubes, and process piping requiring exceptional creep resistance.
Chemical and Fertilizer Industries: High-temperature, high-pressure piping and equipment in nitric acid production and ammonium nitrate plants.
Aerospace and Aviation: Engine high-temperature components, exhaust system piping.
Nuclear Power Industry: Piping for certain auxiliary systems requiring high-temperature stability, though not in the core reactor circuit.
General High-Temperature/High-Pressure Service: Any piping system requiring long-term operation above 500°C while possessing excellent creep and sensitization resistance.
Standards and Quality Assurance
The ASTM A312 standard specifies clear requirements for the production and inspection of TP347 seamless pipes to ensure their performance:
Chemical Composition: Strict control over the content of key elements such as chromium, nickel, carbon, and niobium, especially the niobium-to-carbon ratio, is fundamental to ensuring its stabilization effect and high-temperature properties.
Mechanical Properties: Specifies minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at room temperature. The product must undergo solution heat treatment (typically 1050-1150°C followed by water quenching or rapid cooling) to achieve a uniform austenitic microstructure and optimal corrosion resistance. For applications demanding even higher high-temperature strength, TP347H (the higher carbon variant) may be selected.
Pressure Testing: Each pipe must pass a hydrostatic test to verify its pressure-containing integrity and leak-tightness.
Non-Destructive Examination (NDE): Seamless pipes typically require eddy current or ultrasonic testing to ensure internal material uniformity and the absence of defects.
Corrosion Testing (Optional/By Agreement): Susceptibility tests for intergranular corrosion, such as those per ASTM A262, may be required as per purchase specifications to verify its resistance to sensitization.
