ASTM A213 TP347H Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes
ASTM A213/A213M is an authoritative standard specifically for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubes used in high-temperature, high-pressure equipment such as boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers. This specification imposes the most stringent requirements on material metallurgical quality, high-temperature creep-rupture strength, and long-term microstructural stability under extreme operating conditions.
TP347H (UNS S34709) is the high-carbon, high-strength variant of TP347, specifically designed for ultra-high temperature and ultra-high-pressure service environments. The"H"in its designation explicitly stands for"High Temperature & High Pressure."Its core technology lies in precisely controlling the carbon content within the medium-to-high range of 0.04-0.10%, combined with niobium (Nb) stabilization and specific heat treatment processes (typically high-temperature solution annealing). This promotes the formation of fine, dispersed, and thermally stable niobium carbide (NbC) strengthening phases within the material, thereby providing creep-rupture strength and creep resistance ranking among the highest of all standard austenitic stainless steels within the temperature range of 650°C to 760°C and even higher. It is an indispensable key material for modern high-parameter, high-efficiency power generation units.
Material Characteristics and Core Advantages
Top-Tier High-Temperature Creep Strength:
Its core value lies in its extremely high high-temperature allowable stress. Within the ASME codes, the allowable stress for TP347H in the 650-750°C range is significantly higher than that for TP321H and standard TP347, enabling it to withstand ultra-high steam pressure and thermal stress over extended periods. It is one of the primary material choices for the outlet sections of high-temperature superheaters and reheaters in supercritical and ultra-supercritical boilers.
Exceptional Microstructural Stability and Oxidation Resistance:
The stabilizing effect of niobium not only suppresses chromium carbide precipitation but also imparts excellent high-temperature microstructural stability to the material, providing strong resistance to aging and embrittlement. It exhibits good resistance to oxidation and steam-side oxidation in high-temperature flue gas, with a maximum continuous service temperature of approximately 870°C.
Good Resistance to Sensitization:
Although its carbon content is higher, niobium's strong carbide-forming ability preferentially"fixes"the carbon, still providing better resistance to intergranular corrosion than non-stabilized grades. However, it is important to note that its resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition is lower than that of the extra-low carbon grade TP347L.
Ultimate Reliability of Seamless Tubes:
The seamless manufacturing process ensures the material's safety and integrity under extreme thermal cycling and pressure throughout its entire service life, meeting the strictest power boiler codes.
Primary Application Areas
Critical Components in Advanced Power Station Boilers:
Primarily used for the final stage superheater and reheater tube banks subjected to the highest temperatures and stresses in supercritical (SC), ultra-supercritical (USC), and advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power generation units.
High-temperature steam piping and headers.
Demanding Petrochemical Cracking Units:
Radiant section tubes in the thermally most intense zones of ethylene cracking furnaces and hydrogen reformer furnaces.
High-Performance Industrial Boilers and Heat Exchangers:
Specialized heat exchange equipment in chemical and metallurgical industries requiring endurance under extremely high temperatures and pressures.
Standards and Quality Assurance
The production and inspection of TP347H adhere to the highest-level requirements in ASTM A213 and ASME codes:
Precision Metallurgical Control:
Chemical Composition: Carbon (0.04-0.10%) and niobium (≥8×C% and ≤1.0%) are critical and must be precisely controlled.
Heat Treatment: It must be supplied in the"H"condition (typically solution annealed at ≥1149°C) to ensure the formation of the required strengthening phases, which is fundamental to its performance guarantee.
Code-Based Design:
Its design is entirely dependent on the high-temperature allowable stress values provided for SA-213 TP347H in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II, Part D (Material Properties). These values are based on extensive high-temperature creep-rupture testing and serve as the sole authoritative basis for selection calculations.
Rigorous Quality Verification:
100% eddy current or ultrasonic non-destructive examination.
High-pressure hydrostatic testing.
Precise dimensional and wall thickness tolerance control (per ASTM A1016).
Selection Guidance and Key Considerations
Choosing Between TP347 and TP347H:
For critical high-temperature components where the design metal temperature consistently exceeds approximately 600°C, TP347H must be selected. TP347 must never be used as a substitute, as this could lead to catastrophic creep failure due to insufficient strength.
Comparison with TP321H:
In the temperature range above 650°C, the strength advantage of TP347H is typically more pronounced than that of TP321H. The choice between them should be based on ASME allowable stress calculations at the specific design temperature and a cost-benefit analysis.
Specificity of Welding Processes:
TP347H has extremely high welding requirements. Matching niobium-stabilized welding consumables must be used, with strict control over welding heat input and interpass temperature. For heavy-wall tubes, post-weld heat treatment is usually required to restore properties in the weld zone.
Boundaries of Environmental Suitability:
Its advantages lie in high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Its corrosion resistance is not optimal in wet corrosive environments rich in chloride ions or strongly reducing acids, requiring separate evaluation based on the medium.
