ASTM A213 TP304 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes
TP304 (UNS S30400), as the most classic austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel grade within this standard, serves as a fundamental and critical material in high-temperature heat exchange applications across industries such as power generation and chemicals due to its excellent overall performance. Its low carbon content (≤0.08%) ensures good weldability and a degree of resistance to sensitization.
Material Characteristics and Core Advantages
The chemical composition of TP304 (18-20% Chromium, 8-11% Nickel) provides a solid foundation for its use in high-temperature and high-pressure environments:
Good High-Temperature Strength and Creep Resistance: Possesses sufficient creep-rupture strength and creep resistance within the medium-high temperature range up to approximately 550-600°C, enabling it to withstand internal pressure over extended periods.
Excellent Oxidation and Carburization Resistance: The high chromium content allows the formation of a stable, dense chromium oxide protective layer in high-temperature oxidizing atmospheres such as flue gas and steam, effectively resisting oxidation (scaling) and mild carburization. Maximum service temperatures are approximately 815°C (intermittent) or 705°C (continuous).
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Exhibits good resistance to steam, condensate, hot air, and a wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals, particularly oxidizing media.
Excellent Fabricability and Weldability: Easily fabricated by cold bending, cutting, etc., and can be welded using conventional methods.
High Reliability of Seamless Tubes: The seamless manufacturing process eliminates the potential weakness of a longitudinal weld seam, ensures uniform wall thickness, and provides higher structural integrity and service life under conditions of high pressure, thermal cycling, and vibration.
Primary Application Areas
ASTM A213 TP304 seamless tubes are specifically designed for various high-temperature, high-pressure heat exchange equipment, widely used in:
Power Plant Boilers: Heat exchange tubes for superheaters, reheaters, economizers, and associated steam connection piping.
Industrial Boilers: Heating surface tube bundles for various oil-fired, gas-fired, and coal-fired industrial boilers.
Chemical and Petrochemical Industries: High-temperature, high-pressure heat exchangers, reformer and cracking furnace tubes (lower temperature sections), and process piping.
Thermal Power Systems: Critical high-temperature piping for district heating systems.
General Heat Exchange Equipment: Various shell-and-tube heat exchangers requiring corrosion and heat resistance.
Standards and Quality Assurance
The ASTM A213 standard implements a comprehensive and stringent quality control system for TP304 boiler tubes:
Chemical Composition: Strict control over the content ranges of elements such as chromium, nickel, and carbon to ensure fundamental material properties.
Mechanical Properties: Room temperature tensile testing is performed to ensure compliance with specified tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation requirements.
Hardness Test: Hardness testing is typically required to help assess material condition.
Rigorous Hydrostatic Testing: Each tube must undergo a hydrostatic pressure test at a pressure significantly higher than the design pressure to ensure its pressure-containing integrity and leak-tightness.
Mandatory Non-Destructive Examination: All tubes must be 100% subjected to eddy current testing or ultrasonic testing to detect and reject any potential surface and internal defects (e.g., cracks, inclusions, seams).
Precise Dimensions and Tolerances: Extremely strict tolerance requirements are imposed on outside diameter, wall thickness, length, ovality, and straightness to meet the needs for precise tube layout in tube sheets and efficient heat transfer in heat exchange equipment.
Optional High-Temperature Performance Assurance: Based on purchase agreements, manufacturers may provide high-temperature performance data or conduct additional flattening tests, flaring tests, or flange tests to verify process suitability.
