Core Principles of ISO 2037 / IDF 122 for Sanitary Fittings
ISO 2037 (International Organization for Standardization) and IDF 122 (International Dairy Federation) are globally recognized standards for sanitary piping systems, widely adopted in dairy, food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. These joint standards define the dimensions, connections, and hygienic requirements for sanitary fittings, ensuring interchangeability and system compatibility worldwide.
Foundation of Dimensions and Interchangeability
The standards strictly define the tolerances for the outside diameter, wall thickness, and bend radii of the piping system. For welded elbows, this means their end connection dimensions perfectly match the tubes and other fittings within the ISO system, providing the fundamental guarantee for subsequent high-quality, crevice-free automatic orbital welding.
Materials and Surface Finish
Materials: Mandates the use of AISI 316L (1.4404) or AISI 304 (1.4301) stainless steel, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance to withstand cleaning agents and product media.
Surface Finish: Product contact surfaces must be smooth. Standard mechanical polishing achieves an internal surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, effectively preventing microbial adhesion and meeting the stringent requirements of CIP/SIP.
Hygienic Design for Welding
The standards implicitly require that the entire system must adhere to the no-dead-leg principle. Therefore, the internal weld of a welded elbow must achieve complete penetration, a smooth internal weld reinforcement profile, and absolutely no concavity. The ultimate goal is to form a continuous, smooth, and non-retentive flow path after being welded to the pipe.
International Compliance and System Integration
Welded fittings compliant with ISO 2037/IDF 122 are ideal for constructing piping systems that meet the EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) or EHEDG hygienic design guidelines. They ensure full traceability from raw material to finished product, supporting global market access requirements.
